IPM takes up green manuring campaign at Khangabok

IMPHAL, Apr 19: The state agriculture department on Saturday launched a campaign on green manuring for improving the physical condition as well as fertility of the soil with field demonstrations for the farmers of Khangabok Part-III in Thoubal district.

The practice of ploughing or turning into soil under-composed green plant tissues for the purpose of improving physical condition as well as fertility of the soil is referred to as green manuring, said the experts of the agricultural office (Chemistry), department of agriculture while introducing the benefits of the system launched today.

The manure obtained by this method is known as green manure, they added.

Green manure supplies organic matter to the soil. The organic residues from green manure also help to give stability to soil structure needed for optimum plant growth, Ph Rajendro, AO (Chemistry) said.

He also added that humus formed from green manure increases the absorptive capacity of soil, promotes aeration, drainage and granulation, which helps the plants growth. Green manuring improves the structure of the soil as organic matter stimulates the activity of soil micro-organisms.

Sesbania (commonly chu chu langmei), a kind of legume and its other varieties which would be best suited in the state for making green manure was sown in the fields at Khangabok Kiyamba Loukon where the department is planning to expand its Integrated Pest Management campaign in collaboration with the Multi-farming and Rural Development Organization.

The IPM team as a part of its farming technique is planning to develop a model IPM field in an area of 30 hectares. Here, the new method of green manuring by growing Sesbania will be done, said Rajen.

While talking to the farmers, he said that sowing 15 to 20 kgs of Sesbania seeds in an area of one hectare can produce 60 to 100 kgs of nitrogen in the form of urea. It will also produce around 10 tonnes of organic matter which will increase the moisture retaining capacity of the soil.
This plant can be sown two to three months before the field is prepared for planting main food crops and it decays within 15 to 20 days easily, he said.

Mention may be made that green manure is a type of cover crop grown primarily to add nutrients and organic matter to the soil.

Typically, a green manure crop is grown for a specific period and then plowed under and incorporated into the soil. Green manures usually perform multiple functions that include soil improvement and soil protection.

Leguminous green manures such as Seisbania, clover and vetch contain nitrogen-fixing symbiotic bacteria in root nodules that fix atmospheric nitrogen in a form that plants can use.

Green manures increase the percentage of organic matter (biomass) in the soil, thereby improving water retention, aeration, and other soil characteristics.

The root systems of some varieties of green manure grow deep in the soil and bring up nutrient resources unavailable to shallow-rooted crops.

Some green manure crops when allowed to flower provide forage for pollinating insects.

The practice of green manuring can be traced back to the fallow cycle of crop rotation, which was used to allow soils to recover.

Elaborately speaking on green manuring, experts also said that the green manuring crop supplies additional nitrogen to organic matter, if it is a legume crop, which has the ability to fix nitrogen from the air with the help of its root nodule bacteria (e.g. Rhizobium).
They also protect the soil from erosion and nutrient loss by taking up soluble nutrients which might otherwise have been lost in drainage water or due to erosion. Green manuring crops make available phosphorous and other nutrients for the succeeding crops. Green manure has a marked residual effect also, they added.
The organic matter added to soil by way of green manure acts as food for micro-organisms. The organic matter stimulates the activity of micro-organisms and they stimulate the biochemical changes accordingly.
