We have witnessed Spain lifting the winner's trophy at the just concluded 19th FIFA World Cup 2010 held in South Africa. This world cup has produced some new interesting facts/records both great as well as dubious ones. I'm enlisting some of those facts which I know, and some that I came across from various other media!
1. Italy was knocked out from the World Cup, sadly it was the first time they have also finished last in a group for the first time. Quite an humiliation for the cup-holder.
2. When Brazil drew 0-0 with Portugal in a Group G match on 25th June 2010, it was the first time Brazil failed to score in a group match.
3. Spain became the first time to win the World Cup after losing their opening match. Remember Spain 0-1 Switzerland on 16th June 2010.
4. Spain is the second team after Brazil to win a World Cup held outside their continent. Brazil has done it three times: Sweden 1958, USA 1994 and Japan-South Korea 2002.
5. Spain didn't concede a goal in knock-out stage (4 matches), thus becoming first team to do it en route to winning the trophy.
6. This world cup was the first instance where both the winner and runner-up were eliminated in the first-round (Italy and France).
7. Holland is the only team to have played in 3 finals and not winning any.
8. South Africa failed to reach the second-round. This was the first case where host nation failed to pass first-round!
